# Generation credits on Onceling — what's included, what things cost

Every Onceling account starts with 5 [free generations](/guide/glossary#generation), a one-time account-wide allowance. Generation packs add 10 more. Regenerating a page, re-rendering [in-page text](/guide/glossary#in-page-text) after an edit, and designing a new [character look](/guide/glossary#character-look) (1 generation) all draw from this pool, which is entirely separate from free monthly previews and [preview credits](/guide/glossary#preview-credit).

## How many free generations do I get?

5, included with every account. This is a one-time allowance for the whole account — it does not renew every month.

## What uses a generation?

Regenerating a page's illustration, re-rendering an in-page-text page after a text edit, editing cover or back-cover text, and designing a new illustrated [character look](/guide/glossary#character-look) (1 [generation](/guide/glossary#generation)) all spend from your generation pool.

## What happens when I run out?

You can buy a [generation pack](/guide/glossary#generation-credit) for 10 more [generations](/guide/glossary#generation). Purchased generations don't expire and work on any book you're still editing.

## Are generation credits the same as preview credits?

No. [Generation credits](/guide/glossary#generation-credit) pay for illustration edits after [generation](/guide/glossary#generation). [Preview credits](/guide/glossary#preview-credit) are a separate, reusable reward (granted every 10th purchased book) that only unlock a project's first [free preview](/guide/glossary#preview).

## What if a regeneration fails?

The [generation](/guide/glossary#generation) it used is refunded automatically — you're not charged for an illustration that didn't complete.

## Is a generation pack a subscription?

No. It's a single purchase that adds 10 [generations](/guide/glossary#generation) to your account balance — there's no recurring charge.
